The Macquarie Matrons 2009 Gala ball will be raising funds for Angel Flight Australia as well as The Macquarie Regional Support Fund.
Why Choose Angel Flight Australia?
Angel Flight Australia is a charity that co-ordinates non-emergency flights for financially and medically needy people. All flights are free, and assist patients or compassionate carers travelling to or from medical facilities anywhere in Australia.
Whilst those living close to major hospitals and specialist medical help might find a short journey by road extremely uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable, patients living long distances from such help often have to endure hours of road travel where every bump and turn in the road adds to their discomfort.
With approximately 30% of Australians living in rural areas, there is a potential threat to the health and wellbeing of a significant number of people purely due to their geographical location. So far, Angel Flight has conducted over 5000 Angel Flight missions throughout Australia helping over 1600 patients, carers and family members receive non-emergency medical and humanitarian help. Angel Flight Australia has a significant impact on the health and well being of people in the Macquarie Valley and the far west.
In the 12 month period from July 2008 to June 2009, Angel Flight has conducted:
- 54 flights in and out of Dubbo
- 32 from Narromine
- 14 from Warren
- 24 from Bourke
- 48 from Cobar
Angel Flight is supported by nearly 1800 registered volunteer pilots who are ready to assist patients of all ages needing scheduled treatment at destinations where other forms of transport are physically and emotionally taxing or unaffordable. All of the pilots donate their time, aircraft, and most of the expenses to fly a person in need of medical treatment to their destination. This can be a considerable donation, amounting to hundreds of dollars each flight. Angel Flight pilots do not carry aeromedical staff or medical equipment so do not act as an alternative to the Flying Doctor (RFDS) or Air Ambulance in that capacity.
Monies raised to support Angel Flight will go towards covering fuel expenses for the flight missions, of which the average annual cost is in the vicinity of $500,000 and growing.
The Macquarie Matrons will also donate a portion of the money
raised
to the Macquarie Regional Support Fund.
